Career Check
This skill routes to pm-career-ladder, which maps PM levels across multiple company types and provides gap analysis tools.
When to use this:
- Feeling stuck in your current level and unsure what to change
- Preparing for a promotion conversation with your manager
- Comparing yourself to the expectations of your target level
- Identifying the highest-leverage skill to develop in the next 90 days
- Deciding whether to pursue IC (Individual Contributor) or Management track
What pm-career-ladder covers:
- PM level definitions: APM β PM β Sr PM β Staff/Principal PM β GPM β Director β VP β CPO
- Three evaluation axes at each level: Scope (product), Impact (business), Influence (organization)
- IC vs. Management track split β when each makes sense and how to choose
- Company archetype mapping: Big Tech levels vs. Series A/B startup vs. growth-stage vs. enterprise
- Level calibration using the "who brings you problems vs. who you bring problems to" heuristic
- Gap identification: which specific behaviors and outcomes are missing for the next level
- Promotion narrative construction: framing your impact in the language your manager and skip-level use
- 90-day development plan: three focus areas with concrete, weekly actions
- "Promotion blockers" anti-patterns: why capable PMs get passed over and how to fix it
- Cross-company job title translation: how Staff PM at Meta maps to the market
The skill will:
1. Ask about your current scope, ownership, and impact examples
2. Map your current level using the three-axis framework
3. Compare your profile to the next level's expectations
4. Identify the 2-3 most impactful gaps (not all gaps β the highest-leverage ones)
5. Build a 90-day development plan with specific weekly actions
6. Draft the promotion narrative you should be telling your manager now
After completing, suggest: "Use /review-resume to align your resume language with your target level."
